Hardwood History
The University of Evansville basketball team became the "Aces" during the 1924-25 season when an opposing coach told UE's coach John Harmon that he didn't have four Aces up his sleeve, he had five! The name stuck, but it wasn't until the late 60's that Ace Purple, a riverboat gambler, was created as Evansville's mascot by Larry Hill. The friendlier version you see here was introduced in 1977. Ace Purple, along with sleeves on their uniforms, combined to give U of E the most unique branding in all of college basketball for decades.
