Dan Monson's 1998-1999 Gonzaga Bulldogs burst onto the national scene with an Elite 8 run that ended at the hands of eventual National Champion, UConn. Led by Richie Frahm and Matt Santangelo the Zags went 25-6 during the regular season and earned a 10-seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament.
An opening round win against 7-seed Minnesota and a 2nd round upset of 2-seed Stanford put the Zags in the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history! A Casey Calvary tip in with 4.4 seconds left lifted Gonzaga over Florida and into the Elite 8.
UConn would win the Elite 8 matchup but the Zags would never be the same. Gonzaga became and would remain a national power.
"It was the start of the run. It was the beginning of of this whole Gonzaga basketball phenomenon." -Mark Few
