The 1985-86 ISU Cyclones Men's Basketball team entered the Big 8 Conference Tournament sitting at 15-9 and in need of a couple wins to make the NCAA Tournament. That's exactly what they got when they beat Colorado and Nebraska on back to back nights before taking #2 Kansas down to the wire in the championship game.
That was enough to earn the Cyclones a #7 seed in the Midwest Region where they would first face #10 seed Miami OH and their superstar Ron Harper. Led by Jeff Grayer's 19 points and 11 rebounds ISU survived, 81-79 in OT to advance to the 2nd Round.
Next up was #2 seed and 5th ranked Michigan. Led by a balanced scoring attack 14 big points by Ron Virgil, Iowa State pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the tournament, 72-69. The trip to the Sweet 16 was the first in school history, and they went in style with these white and red basketball shorts.
