Coming off a disappointing 4th place finish in the SEC the year before, Eddie Sutton's Wildcats entered the 1987-1988 season looking for redemption. With a #5 preseason ranking expectations were high and a lot of the hope rested on their homegrown hero, Rex Chapman. The sophomore guard was up to the challenge leading a balanced Kentucky attack with 19 point per game, earning All-SEC 1st Team honors.
The Wildcats won the SEC regular season title with a 13-5 record, then stormed through the SEC Tournament by beating Ole Miss, LSU and Georgia to take the crown. Kentucky finished the season 25-5 which earned them a #2 seed in the Southeast Region of the NCAA Tournament.
UK advanced to the Sweet 16 after wins over #15 Southern and #7 Maryland. In the Sweet 16 the Wildcats were upset by #6 Villanova. After the season Chapman was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets with the 8th overall pick. He remains "King Rex" to Big Blue Nation.
