Bob Huggins' Cincinnati team led by Kenyon Martin, Pete Mickeal and DerMarr Johnson entered the '99-2000 season poised to make a run at a National Championship. It only took one week from them to take over the #1 ranking which they held for 11 weeks during the season.
After going 28-2 during the regular season it looked like the Bearcats were destined for a Final Four and potential matchup with eventual champ Michigan State. Unfortunately, that all changed in the opening moments of the Conference USA Tournament when Martin broke his leg.
Martin was a consensus 1st Team All-American, the Wooden Award Winner and Naismith Award winner for 1999-2000 and the backbone of the Bearcats team. Without him, Cincinnati fell to a #2 seed in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament where they lost in the 2nd round to #7 seed Tulsa, 69-61.
Kenyon Martin's injury remains one of college basketball's greatest "What-Ifs?".
"No disrespect to Mateen Cleaves, Mo Pete and those guys, but they didn't have enough to beat us, man. They didn't. That was our championship. My sophomore year was the best team I've ever been on in my life."
-Steve Logan, Cincinnati Bearcats Guard
