Dana Altman's Creighton Blue Jays entered the NCAA tournament as the MVC tournament champs and boasting a 21-8 record. Led all year by senior forward Rodney Buford, Creighton earned the #10 seed in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament.
Waiting for them was Denny Crum's Louisville Cardinals and it seemed like the moment may be too big for the Blue Jays. Enter Buford.
His breakaway dunk began the Bluejays' rally from a 40-27 deficit with 16 minutes left. After shooting just for 2-for-13 in the first half, he hit a 3-pointer that put Creighton ahead for good at 52-49. But Buford had help.
Ben Walker scored seven points in the final three minutes including four free throws as Creighton went 10-for-10 in the last 90 seconds to win 62-58. It was the schools second tournament win of the last 25 years.
