  • Hardwood History

The 1979-1980 season was Georgetown's first as a member of the BIG EAST Conference.  John Thompson's team earned the nickname "Heart Attack Hoyas" for their participation in multiple close games throughout the season.  The Hoyas won seven games by five or fewer points, and four of its six losses came in the final seconds or overtime.

One game in particular stands out.  February 13, 1980.  Number 3 ranked Syracuse entered the game with a 57-game home winning streak at Manley Field House, and with a shot to secure sole possession of the BIG EAST regular season championship.  It was also their last game in Manley Field House before moving to the new Carrier Dome.

Sleepy Floyd's two free throws with 5 seconds left, clinched the upset win for the Heart Attack Hoyas!  In the post game press conference, John Thompson declared, "Manley Field House is officially closed."  That game and that line is credited with spawning the Syracuse-Georgetown rivalry that would last the next 34 years.

Georgetown would go on to win a share of the BIG EAST regular season championship and would also win the BIG EAST Tournament championship.
