  • Hardwood History

Larry Brown took over the Kansas Jayhawk program in 1983 and promptly got the KU program back on track and into the NCAA Tournament.  In 1984 he landed prize recruit Danny Manning who joined an already solid cast of players like Greg Dreiling, Ron Kellogg, Calvin Thompson and Cedric Hunter. With everyone coming back the 1985-86 season was shaping up to be something special in Lawrence.

After winning both the Big 8 regular season championship and the Big 8 Tournament Kansas entered the NCAA Tournament as the #1 seed in the Midwest.  After 2 easy wins over North Carolina A&T and Temple, the Jayhawks were headed to the Sweet 16 to take on Scott Skiles and Michigan State.

An overtime thriller ensued, with KU pulling out a 10 point victory on the back of Calvin Thompson's 26 points. It was Manning and Dreiling's turn in the Elite 8 against North Carolina State.  The Jayhawks used a strong second half to put the Wolfpack away, 75-67, punching their ticket to Dallas and the Final Four.
