  • Hardwood History

No one expected much out of the 1983 Georgia Bulldogs basketball team. The greatest player in program history, Dominique Wilkins, decided to skip his senior season in Athens and head to the NBA instead.  Luckily for UGA, his decision allowed Vern Fleming to grow into his own and lead the team in scoring at 17 points per game.

With the help of Terry Fair and James Banks, Georgia finished the regular season 15-9 and needed to make a run in the SEC Tournament to guarantee their spot in the NCAA Tournament.  And that's exactly what they did beating Ole Miss, Tennessee and Alabama to capture the SEC Tournament crown.

At 18-9, the Bulldogs finished #18 in the final AP Poll which was good enough for a 4 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament.  UGA barely squeaked by 5 seed VCU before upsetting the #1 seed St. John's, 70-67.  That put Georgia one game away from the schools first Final Four appearance.

Standing in their way was #2 seed North Carolina and their All-Americans Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins.  "The day before we played North Carolina, Sam Perkins said he didn't know what conference Georgia was in.  We kind of took it personally," Banks recalled.

Georgia got the last laugh beating the Tar Heels, 82-77 and booking their trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico and the Final Four. That's why these 1983 UGA Georgia  Bulldogs basketball shorts are a must have for any University of Georgia fanatic!
