  • Hardwood History

The 1985-1986 Louisville Cardinals came into the season with dreams of a National Championship run and rightfully so.  Denny Crum had a roster loaded with NBA talent.  Ranked #9 in the AP Preseason Poll the Cardinals played an unselfish style of basketball which led to five players all averaging double digits.

A 26-7 regular season, and Metro Conference championship earned U of L the #2 seed in the West.  Wins over Drexel and Bradley put the Cardinals in the Sweet 16 against college basketball blue blood, North Carolina.  The Tar Heels were no match for Louisville's balanced scoring attack and fell by 15.

A win over Auburn put the Cardinals back in the Final Four to face the Cinderella #11 seed LSU Tigers.  Led by Milt Wagner's 22 points Louisville advanced to face #1 Duke in the National Championship game.

"Never Nervous" Pervis Ellison, Louisville's freshman center, turned in the game of his life agains the Blue Devils.  Scoring 25 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to help Louisville secure its 2nd National Title, 72-69.

"It was great, man.  It was for the city of Louisville.  That was my third time at the Final Four.  We had to get that one."

      -Milt Wagner
