Charles Spoonhour's Billikens entered the 1997-1998 season on the heels of a disappointing 11-18 season the year before. But Saint Louis coaches, players and fans had reason to be optimistic for '98. That reason was Larry Hughes.
The freshman Parade All-American chose to stay and play for his hometown school instead of going to one of college basketball's blue blood programs. Hughes didn't disappoint. He averaged 21 points and 5 rebounds a game while earning All-CUSA 1st Team honors.
More importantly the arrival of Hughes led to a program turnaround. SLU went 21-10 during the regular season which was enough to earn a #10 seed in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament. A 1st round win against UMass put the Billikens one win away from the Sweet 16. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be as Saint Louis fell to #2 seed Kentucky, 88-61.
"If I could give advice to somebody, I'd tell them to stay home, just to be around your family. You only get one chance." -Larry Hughes
