After losing Keith Van Horn to the NBA Draft Rick Majerus' Utah Utes started the '97-98 season ranked #16 in the preseason poll. They quickly rose up the rankings after starting the season on an 18 game win streak and finishing the season 25-3. As the #3 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament the Utes advanced to the Sweet 16 after wins against #14 seed San Francisco and #6 seed Arkansas.
Led by a trio of future NBA players, Andre Miller, Michael Doleac and Hanno Mottola Utah squeaked by West Virginia by 3. They then destroyed #1 Arizona by 25 points to reach the Final Four.
The Utes had one more upset up their sleeve knocking off #1 North Carolina, 65-59 to advance to the National Championship game. Utah's hot streak would end at the hands of Kentucky, 78-69.
"We were so good primarily because we all cared about each other."
-Michael Doleac, Utah Utes
