Navy Midshipmen 1985-1986
The 1985-86 Navy Midshipmen were led by eventual Hall of Fame center David Robinson and entered the season ranked in the Top 20. Navy went 13-1 to claim the CAA regular season title before entering the NCAA Tournament as the #7 seed in the East Regional.
In the Round of 32 the Midshipmen avenged an early season loss to Syracuse beating the #2 seed, 97-85 to reach the Sweet 16. A 1-point win over another Cinderella team, Cleveland State set up a showdown with #1 seed Duke for a spot in the Final Four. Even with the loss to Duke, 1986 marked the second visit to the Elite 8 in school history.
"I think our first team at Navy won one Division-I game. And that was against Army. If anyone would have said to me then, that in five years ‘you’re going to be playing for the Final Four,’ I would have said, ‘You have lost your mind. You have completely lost your mind.’"
