St. Bonaventure 1969-1970
St. Bonaventure entered the 1969-1970 season ranked inside the Top 20 and climbed inside the Top 5 by winning their first 9 games before a loss to Villanova. They wouldn't lose another game in the regular season earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Once there St. Bona defeated Davidson and N.C. State before avenging that Villanova loss with a 97-74 blowout of the Wildcats giving the school its first Final Four appearance. However, the Nova win came with a steep price. Star big man Bob Lanier hurt his knee on a collision with a teammate and was unable to play in the Final Four game against Jacksonville and their star Artis Gilmore.
Without Lanier's 29ppg and 16rpg the Bonnies would go on to lose that game 91-83 ending a dream season.
"It was a magical moment in our lives, no question. In our hearts, we knew we were good enough to win the championship.’’ -Larry Weise, Head Coach
