The Arkansas Razorbacks entered the 1977-1978 season with a Top 10 national ranking and high hopes of reaching the Final Four. Coach Eddie Sutton returned star players Ron Brewer and Sidney Moncrief from the '77 team that went 26-2 but suffered a disappointing loss to Wake Forest in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
After going 25-3 in the regular season the Hogs were ready to make their run in the NCAA Tournament. After blowing out Weber State in the first round Arkansas found itself up against national power, #2 ranked UCLA. The Razorbacks dominated the Bruins in the 1st half and had just enough to hang on, 74-70.
A win over Cal State Fullerton put Arkansas in the Final Four where they lost to #1 Kentucky then beat #6 Notre Dame in the 3rd place game.
"I think it was a great catapult for the resurgence of Arkansas basketball. Going to the Final Four gave us a lot of exposure and helped recruit a lot of great players to Arkansas. It created a lot of history for the Razorbacks."
