Cole Field House opened on Maryland's campus as a 12,000 seat basketball arena in 1955. In the '60s legendary coach Lefty Driesell had 3,000 seats added to increase the home court advantage the Terrapins enjoyed during their games.
Cole was also the site of the historical 1966 Final Four that saw Texas Western and their all African American starting five defeat #1 Kentucky. A win that changed the game of college basketball forever. At the time of it's closing Cole Field House had hosted the most upsets of #1 ranked teams.
In its final season, 2001-2002, Maryland was undefeated at home and won the National Championship. A fitting end to a historic college basketball venue.
