Billy Donovan entered his second season as head coach of the Florida Gators with a very young and inexperienced team. What he did have for the 1997-1998 was a superstar in the making, Jason Williams. Williams sat out the previous year after transferring from Marshall but the 6'1 guard from Belle, West Virginia wasted little time making an impact once he was allowed to play.
The Gators went 12-8 with Williams on the floor as he led Florida in scoring and assists. At the time of his dismissal from the program J-Will ranked among the SEC's best in seven statistical categories.
Florida went on to finish the season 14-14, accepting a bid to the NIT where they lost in the first round to Georgetown. While the year may not have panned out the way Donovan wanted it to, the foundation was starting to form. That foundation would help lead Florida to back to back deep runs in the NCAA Tournament and a National Championship game appearance in 2000.
