Jacksonville Dolphins 1969-1970
The 1969-1970 Jacksonville Dolphins started the season unranked and uder the radar. That soon was not the case after going 23-1 in the regular season with the only loss coming to a Top 10 ranked FSU team which they later avenged. Head Coach Joe Williams had a deep team that saw 5 players average double figures. He also had one of the best college basketball players of all time.
Artis Gilmore averaged 26ppg and 22rpg in leading the Dolphins to the Final Four. The road wasn't easy though. Tough games against Iowa, Kentucky and St. Bonaventure set up a title match showdown with the mighty UCLA Bruins and the John Wooden dynasty.
Even though Jacksonville would fall to UCLA, 80-69, they left their mark on college basketball history as the smallest school to ever play in the championship game and one of the most unlikely tournament runs of all time.
“There will be dozens more Cinderellas at the Big Dance, but never another Jacksonville.”
