Roy Williams and the Kansas Jayhawks came into the 1995-1996 season with high hopes of a National Championship and for good reason too. His roster boasted 6 future NBA players including a phenom freshman named Paul Pierce.
The loaded Jayhawks finished the regular season 26-4, never falling outside of the Top 5 in the AP Poll, and winning the Big 8 regular season championship. They earned the #2 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament.
Two blowouts over #15 seed South Carolina State and #10 Santa Clara put KU in the Sweet 16 and up against a very good Arizona Wildcats team led by Miles Simon. In an instant tournament classic Kansas squeaked out an 83-80 win behind big games by Pierce, Jerod Haase, Jacque Vaughn and reserve B.J. Williams.
Kansas was now one win away from another trip to the Final Four. In the Elite 8 Syracuse's 2-3 matchup zone proved to be the difference holding the Jayhawks to 57 points as the Orange advanced to the Final Four, 60-57.
