LSU Tigers x Legacy Collection
19nine’s Legacy Collection dives inside the archives to bring back some college basketball classics. Like the originals, we crafted each Legacy pair of retro shorts with the materials and details to honor the original designs. It was a labor of love in our pursuit to provide an era specific keepsake that celebrates the most iconic styles in college basketball history.
'91 Tiger Legacy
Legendary LSU coach Dale Brown started recruiting Shaquille O'Neal when he was in East Germany doing coaching clinics. O'Neal, an army brat, was 6'6 so Brown asked him what his rank was. Shaq was only 13. Fast forward 5 years and O'Neal was dominating college basketball for Brown and the LSU Tigers.
For his 1990-1991 sophomore season Shaq averaged nearly 28 points and 15 rebounds per game on way to capturing Player of the Year honors. He was simply a phenomenon that put him in the same breath as college big men legends like Russell, Walton and Kareem.
"Don't call Shaquille the next anybody," Kareem warned the media back in '91 after watching O'Neal play in person. "Let him be the first Shaquille."
And the first and only Shaquille he was.
