Marquette University 1969-1970
For the 1969-1970 season Marquette rolled out a navy-blue uniform with horizontal gold stripes running across both the jerseys and the shorts specifically for what would be MU's run to the 1970 National Invitation Tournament title. Unhappy with his seed in the NCAA Tournament, head coach Al McGuire opted for the NIT instead.
The "Bumblebee" uniforms were an instant hit, and MU wore them the next two seasons as well for road games, complete with matching warm-ups.
"Oh, wow, that was the craze," recounted Hank Raymonds, McGuire's longtime assistant, "Everybody wanted them."
After the 1971-'72 season the uniforms were outlawed, supposedly because they disoriented opposing players when MU players jumped up and down.
