Memphis State Tigers x Legacy Collection
19nine’s Legacy Collection dives inside the archives to bring back some college basketball classics. Like the originals, we crafted each Legacy pair of retro shorts with the materials and details to honor the original designs. It was a labor of love in our pursuit to provide an era specific keepsake that celebrates the most iconic styles in college basketball history.
'92 Tiger Legacy
The 1991-92 Memphis State University basketball team were led by Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, the nation's top recruit from the previous year. After sitting one year as a Prop 48, Hardaway took the Tigers and the nation by storm. The Memphis schoolboy legend averaged over 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists per game in leading the Tigers to a 23-11 regular season record.
That record earned Memphis State the #6 seed in the Midwest region of the NCAA Tournament. A 10 point win over #11 Pepperdine started things off. A showdown with #3 Arkansas, a school that Penny considered coming out of HS, was next.
After trailing by 8 at the half, the Tigers turned it on in the 2nd half, out scoring the Razorbacks by 10 to squeak out a 2 point win and a trip to the Sweet 16.
An OT thriller over #7 Georgia Tech put the Tigers one win away from the schools first Final 4 since 1985. It wasn't meant to be as rival Cincinnati ended Memphis' Cinderella run in the Elite 8.
For his part, Hardaway remains a Memphis legend.
"I love him. The pressure was great to keep Penny here in Memphis. We need the attraction. But he needed us more." -Larry Finch, Head Coach
