Ranked just inside the Top 20 coming into the 1987-1988 season, Billy Tubbs' Oklahoma Sooners wasted little time climbing the polls. After getting off to a 14-0 start OU finished the regular season 30-3, capturing both Big 8 regular season and tournament championships.
Oklahoma powered by Stacey King, Harvey Grant and Mookie Blaylock earned the #1 seed in the Southwest Region of the NCAA Tournament. Four dominating performances over Chattanooga, Auburn, Louisville and Villanova put OU in the Final Four for the third time in school history.
An 86-78 win over #1 seed Arizona put the Sooners one win from a National Championship with only conference rival Kansas standing in their way. In a tight fought battle, Oklahoma ended losing by 4, 83-79.
Even in defeat, the '88 Sooners remain one of the greatest college basketball teams of all time.
"I just think of how much fun it was. It was just a great, great team. I think we were ahead of our time a little bit, with the style we played, the atmosphere Billy created."
