Hardwood History
The Astrodome, also known as the Eighth Wonder of the World, is a historic sports stadium located in Houston, Texas. While the Astrodome is most commonly associated with baseball, it was also used for basketball games during its early years.
In fact, the first professional basketball game ever played in the Astrodome was held on January 5, 1968, between the Houston Mavericks and the New Orleans Buccaneers of the American Basketball Association (ABA). The game was a major event, drawing a crowd of over 20,000 spectators.
Over the years, the Astrodome also hosted college basketball games, including the Houston Cougars and the University of Texas Longhorns, as well as NBA exhibition games. However, basketball was never as big of a draw as baseball, and as the popularity of the Astrodome declined in the 1990s, basketball games became less frequent.
Today, the Astrodome is no longer used for sports events, but efforts are underway to preserve the historic stadium as a cultural landmark.
