The UConn Huskies entered the 1994-1995 season ranked 19th in the country and it didn't take them long to find a permanent spot inside the Top 5. Led by sweet shooting sophmore guard, Ray Allen, and senior forward Donny Marshall, the Huskies rattled off 15 straight wins to open the season.
UConn finished the season 23-3 and earned a Big East Championship going 16-2 in conference. After losing to Kerry Kittles and Villanova in the Big East Tournament championship game, the Huskies were given the 2-seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament.
After making it to the Sweet 16 after wins against Chattanooga and Cincinnati, UConn advanced to the Elite 8 after defeating 3-seed Maryland, 99-89. That setup a showdown with the O'Bannon brothers and 1-seed UCLA. Despite Allen's 36 points, Jim Calhoun's Huskies would come up one win short of his first Final Four after falling 102-96 in the shootout of the tournament.
“Ray was awesome, man... I’m known as a pretty good defensive player. But I was in his face, and we had other guys in his face. He scored coming off screens. He scored shooting off-balance. Man, I’m glad we don’t have to play him again.”
