The Villanova Wildcats men's basketball team won the 2016 National Championship, which was their second National Championship in school history. They defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels 77-74 on a game-winning buzzer-beater by Kris Jenkins in one of the most memorable moments in NCAA tournament history.
During the championship game, Villanova led by as many as 10 points in the second half, but North Carolina battled back and tied the game at 74-74 with just 4.7 seconds left on the clock. Villanova then inbounded the ball and Ryan Arcidiacono brought the ball up the court before passing it to Jenkins, who hit a three-pointer as time expired to give Villanova the win.
The victory capped off a remarkable season for Villanova, who finished with a record of 35-5. They were the top seed in the South Region of the NCAA tournament and defeated UNC-Asheville, Iowa, Miami, and Kansas to advance to the Final Four. In the national semifinals, they defeated Oklahoma 95-51, which was the largest margin of victory ever in a Final Four game.
Some notable players on that Villanova team included Ryan Arcidiacono, Josh Hart, Kris Jenkins, Jalen Brunson, and Mikal Bridges. The team was coached by Jay Wright, who has been the head coach at Villanova since 2001 and has won numerous awards for his coaching success.
