Wichita State Shockers 1980-1981
Ask any Wichita State fan who was alive at the time what happened on March 20, 1981 and you'll get your answer. "We rocked K.U." Long time rivals who rarely get the opportunity to play each other, Kansas and Wichita State met in front of 34,036 spectators at the Superdome in New Orleans for the Sweet 16. Led by Antoine Carr and Cliff Levingston the Shockers were MVC champs and riding high after wins over #11 Southern and #3 Iowa. But it was the Kansas game that would define their season.
With WSU down 1 Mike Jones gave the Shockers the 66-65 upset on a 25 foot jumper with only 2 seconds remaining.
“You’ve got to understand, we were a pretty close bunch way before the tournament. We walked to campus together, we partied together on weekends, we slept at each other’s apartments all year. We were very tight-knit. We knew we were good and we knew we had the heart of the community."
