The University of Richmond pulled off one of the greatest upsets in college basketball history in 1991. The Spiders knocked off second-seeded Syracuse, 73-69, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in the South Region at Cole Field House.
The 15th-seeded Spiders became the lowest seeded team to win a first-round game in modern tournament history. Led by Curtis Blair, Richmond never trailed in the game, and twice led by 10 points. Nevertheless, Syracuse had several chances to tie in the final minute with the last gasp being 3 point attempt from the corner with 4 seconds remaining.Mike Hopkins secured the rebound and Blair clinched the victory with a free throw. The Spiders were headed to the round of 32.
"I told them that great things can happen in basketball, but we almost have to play a flawless game." -Dick Tarrant
