  • Hardwood History

John Wooden had an illustrious career as the head coach of the men's basketball team at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) from 1948 to 1975. Wooden's tenure at UCLA is widely regarded as one of the most successful coaching careers in the history of college basketball.

Wooden took over the UCLA Bruins program in 1948, and although he faced initial struggles, he gradually built a powerhouse team that would dominate college basketball for years to come. In 1964, Wooden led UCLA to its first NCAA championship, and he would go on to win a remarkable total of 10 national championships in the span of 12 years.

From 1967 to 1973, UCLA achieved an unprecedented feat by winning seven consecutive NCAA titles, an accomplishment that has never been matched. This incredible run, often referred to as the "UCLA Dynasty" or the "Wooden Era," solidified Wooden's legacy as one of the greatest coaches in the sport's history.

Wooden's coaching style emphasized teamwork, discipline, and attention to detail. He emphasized the importance of fundamentals, often focusing on mastering basic skills like passing, shooting, and footwork. He also emphasized the development of character and instilled values such as hard work, loyalty, and humility in his players.

Wooden's success extended beyond championships. He guided UCLA to 19 conference championships and had four undefeated seasons. He also coached several legendary players, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then known as Lew Alcindor) and Bill Walton, who would go on to have successful careers in the NBA.

In addition to his coaching achievements, Wooden was known for his inspirational quotes and his teachings on leadership and success. He was a revered figure in the basketball community and beyond, admired for his wisdom, integrity, and the lasting impact he had on his players.

Consistent quality and comfort. 19Nine is as good as college apparel gets.

The UCLA additions over the past year have been great.

Now let’s head north and see some Cal stuff in the future!
