John Chaney's 1998-1999 Temple Owls entered the season with high hopes and a lofty #7 preseason ranking. After knocking off #5 Michigan State the Owls lost 4 in a row and fell out of the Top 25. Temple would recover from the early season losses to go 13-3 in the A-10 and win the regular season conference championship.
A regular season record of 21-10 was good enough to earn a #6 seed in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament. The Owls would defeat #11 seed Kent State, #3 seed Cincinnati, and #10 seed Purdue to reach the Elite 8 with only #1 Duke standing between them and a trip to the Final Four. The Blue Devils won 85-64.
"I just remember the intensity of every round just got more and more. As we kept winning it became, 'Oh, man, this is serious.' It's such an accomplishment, to get that far. But when you're one step from the Final Four, you want the chance to win it all." -Lynn Greer, Temple
